Model of the antioxidant metabolite glutathione. The yellow sphere is the redox-active sulfur atom that provides antioxidant activity, while the red, blue, white, and dark grey spheres represent oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon atoms, respectively
Due to the exposure to radiation, chemicals, pollution, smoke, drugs, alcohol, pesticides and even the sun along with the various metabolic processes such as poor diet, human is forced to use stored fat to make up for energy it lacks; leaving the body under constant threat of breakdown and forcing the cells of our organism to start emission of atoms harmful for the cells themselves. These are so called free radicals and they should be suppressed. Substances that are known as antioxidants, neutralise free radicals before they do any real damage. The antioxidants consist of a variety of vitamins, minerals and ferments wholesome to human body. Antioxidants have the faculty to turn free radicals into harmless molecules. Consequently, the cells of the body are protected from oxidative damage that causes aging, cancer and numerous other diseases. Many vitamins and minerals are antioxidants, but not all antioxidants are equally potent. Some are produced by the body itself, including ferments and some other molecules. Other essential antioxidants such as vitamin C, E and selenium come with the food. Anthocyanins are pigments that give to pomegranates, bilberries, mulberries and some other berries the dark, hue, purple colors are potent antioxidants. Anthocyanins contain natural plant chemicals called polyphenols having very highantioxidant value. The darker the coloring of the fruit, the more anthocyanins it contains.
